The Doctors name

Post by Admin-Emperor Dalek on Mon 24 Jul 2017 - 16:49

Thought this needed its own topic. Steven Moffat outgoing  producer and writer has said the Doctors name is 'Doctor Who' because in the first Doctor story The War Machines, the computer -WOTAN says 'Doctor Who is required'

But in the series 7B finale The Name of the Doctor which Moffat wrote it was not implied it was Doctor Who. Only in the Dalek films he refers himself as 'Dr Who'.

What about in the Name of the Doctor? His name certainly wasn't Doctor Who and that story was written by Moffat.

the way I see it, "The Doctor" is his title. And "Doctor Who" is just the question. It is not his name (see my Shut Up Steven rant). As in the Series 6 finale, Dorium tells us what the first question is "Doctor Who?". Besides, rule #1, the Doctor lies. in World Enough and time he says "My name is Doctor Who", but if you're not an idiot and know rule 1 of the Doctor, you would have known instantly he was lying.

I don't think his real name will ever be revealed, and I honestly hope it never will be. It just has so much mystery surrounding it.

In Silence in the Library, River says he told the Doctor his name, now while the Doctor said the exact same thing to her in the S6 finale, and it turned out he was lying, I doubt River was lying to the Doctor there, as it was the only way he would believe her.

I think there's a rather key distinction to be made here.

There's the Doctor's birth name and then there is what he considers to be his "real name" (the name he chose for himself which reflects who he is as a person). He's gone through numerous iterations (e.g. "Theta Sigma"), and "Doctor Who" was the second to last one before he decided to just go by "The Doctor".

What he considers to be his real name is pretty much his title.
